Keyword Research Step One: Keyword Tool

The first, and maybe most important step in on-page Search Engine Optimization, is keyword research. Your keywords will make up much of the foundation for the remaining SEO work.

Google AdWords offers a Free Keyword Tool - to begin your keyword research, you first need to set up a Free Google Adwords account:

  1. Begin by clicking on the following link to the Google Adwords sign-up page
  2. Click on the blue “Start Now” button
  3. On the “Create Google Account” page, it will ask:

 “Which best describes you?”

"I have an email address and password that I already use with Google services like AdSense, Gmail, Orkut, or iGoogle."

  • “Click” this option if you already have a Google account. It will then ask you if you would like to use your existing account to sign into Google Adwords? If you choose this option, a sign in box will open and you will be able to sign into Google Adwords using your existing Google account.
  • If you do not choose this option, you will be taken through the set-up process described in the section below.
"I do not use these other services."
  • If you choose this option, you will be asked to create a free Google Account. This process will require an active email account, a password using a minimum of 8 characters, and for you to fill in the “captcha” to verify that you are in fact a real person.

Find  keyword tool by hovering over the “Reporting and Tools” tab at the top of the page, and scroll down to the “Keyword Tool” option and select it.

Now that you have a Google Adwords account and access to the free Keyword Tool, it is time to begin your keyword research.
